Re: United States v. Gary Vitta

Crim. No. 15-01

Dear Judge Chesler,

My name is Dr. Anthony Novembre and I am writing to you about on behalf of Dr. Gary Vitta whom I have known both as a friend and colleague for over 25 years.

Gary has a wonderful family and two beautiful daughters and has been blessed with a granddaughter. The most impressive aspect about Gary is his relentless commitment to his family; he has always been and continues to be a “pillar of strength” to his family.

Next to his family, is Gary’s passion in working with children.  He has dedicated his whole life in educating children and empowering them to become productive members of our community.  Gary has a unique way of touching lives and turning children’s dreams into reality. His plethora of experience which range from teaching to high level administration, as a Superintendent of Schools and as a County Superintendent of  Schools, has shaped a partnership and a circle of trust among students, parents, teachers and community members.

Gary has also been an inspiration to me.  I can remember when I decided to leave my job as Director of Religious Education for my Church, and Gary indicated that this was a ‘turning point’ for me and that God had a plan for me and that in due time, it would all unfold for me. Gary noted that God orchestrated this event in my life and that by closing this one door, He would open one larger and wider one for me.  In time, this came to pass.  I was able to work at Celebrate the Children Schools in Denville, N. J. as the Director of Business.  Celebrate the Children School serves children on the “autism” spectrum in Pre-K to 21

years old.  Gary provided indispensable assistance to our business central office staff in saving dollars and improving efficiencies in our business office.  This was evident from all the efficiencies he had put in place in Rockaway and now was willing to share with our staff in my role as Director of Business.

When our Board of Trustees was looking for additional people to join the Board, I immediately thought of Gary; with his educational experience he would be an asset to the school.  With Gary’s guidance, I was able to move from Celebrate the School to working with Charter Schools touching the lives of hundreds of children in the inner city schools of Camden and Atlantic City.

I know that this uneventful challenge in Gary’s life has taken a toll on him and his family.  The emotional strain, the hardships and the pain that have resulted from this incident have consumed him from all sides. I know how much Gary is suffering and the toll that it has also taken on me and our friendship.  I truly believe that this error that Gary made was out of fear and that a good friendship with a vendor would be misconstrued.  Gary is the kind of person who has the courage to admit mistakes.  I will stand by Gary no matter what because I know him to be a person of moral and impeccable values.  As you consider your decision on Gary Vitta, please consider the person that has provided many years of services to children with an impeccable record.  I trust and pray that you will consider the “whole person” and not just an isolated incident.  I thank you so very much for taking the time to read this and trust that you will make the right decision.

Respectfully,

Dr. Anthony Novembre

School Business Administrator/ Board Secretary

Former Somerset County Superintendent of Schools
