 United States v. Gary Vitta

Crim. No.  15-01

 February 17, 2015

Dear Judge Chesler,

As an elected member of the Rockaway Township Board of Education from 2003-2012,

Dr. Vitta was superintendent of our board from 2006-2011.  During this period of time,

I feel that I got to know Dr. Vitta quite well.   He was always doing what was right for our

students, staff and district.  He is a very honorable, caring, sensitive man whose leadership

help guide our district in a most positive way.

Many times Dr. Vitta donated items from his home (furniture/piano) to our various schools

in our district for the benefit our of school community.  His calming manor and ability to look

at all sides in a situation helped him gain the respect of not only the board  members but also

of our school district community.

His lifetime of dedicated service to various educational communities in our state, touching the

lives of countless students and parents is an inspiration to us all.  Please don’t let a lifetime of

achievement go unnoticed due to one lapse in good judgment.   In talking with Gary over the past few

months, I have noticed that this has taken an enormous toll on him and he is truly, repentful for

this situation he put himself as well as his entire family and friends in as well.

Your Honor, it was a true lapse of good judgment and uncharacteristic of the man who I know well.

Gary and I have consistently kept in touch over the years that he hasn’t been with us here in Rockaway

and has always sent good wishes to me and my family during our various Holiday whether it be Rosh Hashanah,

Chanukah, Passover or Yom Kippur.  He seems never to forget and I admire his close ties with everyone around him.

He looks for the good in everyone and I have rarely met a person like this.

I continue to support Gary during these hard times for him and my prayers are with him and his

family during this ordeal.   Judge Chesler, I know you have a job to do and I respect that.  If there

is a way that the court can have leniency in behalf of Dr. Vitta and take into consideration his lifetime

of achievement, it would be appreciated by all who know and love him.

 Respectfully yours,

 Fred West
